Cline Delivered Game-winning RBI to Advance to Next Round in Region 20 DII Tournament
The Frederick Community College Cougars advance to the next round of the NJCAA Region 20 DII/Mid-Atlantic District Softball Tournament with a 10-9 victory over the fifth-seeded Cecil College Seahawks on Wednesday afternoon in Frederick.
Frederick exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning, capped by a two-run home run from Brianna Dehoff and a two-RBI single by Piper Barnes. Joelle Staub added an RBI double to give the Cougars a commanding 6-2 lead. In the fifth, Leo Cline came through with a clutch bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 9-2, giving the Cougars what seemed like breathing room.
The Seahawks refused to go quietly. They clawed back with three runs in the sixth and then rallied for four more in the seventh to tie the game at 9-9. In the bottom half of the inning, with the pressure mounting, Frederick delivered once again. Cline, who finished with four hits and four RBIs, laced another double into the outfield, bringing home the go-ahead run and sealing the walk-off victory for the Cougars.
Frederick racked up 19 hits in the game, with Kaitlin Murphy and Ava Yockelson collecting three hits each, and Barnes and Cline adding four hits each. On the mound, Alondra Sidock provided four solid innings to start the game, and Murphy earned the win in relief.
With the win, Frederick improves to 14-22 on the season and will face the #1 seed Potomac State College on Friday, May 9 at 2:00 PM in the Region 20 DII Championship Tournament at CCBC Catonsville.
