Frederick Community College Cougars softball split on Wednesday against their third Region 20 DII opponent, the Cecil College Seahawks. After falling in Game 1 by a score of 7-2, the Cougars responded in a big way, capturing their second win of the season with an impressive 12-3 walk-off home run victory in Game 2.
The opener saw Frederick struggle to generate offense against Cecil's pitcher, who allowed just five hits while striking out 11. Frederick's Brianna Dehoff and Ava Yockelson, each drove in a run, but the Cougars couldn't overcome defensive miscues and the Seahawk's offense. Hailey Justice went the distance in the circle for Frederick but was tagged with the loss.
In Game 2, the Cougars flipped the script with an offensive explosion, scoring eight runs in the first inning alone. Leo Cline sparked the rally with an RBI double, while Brianna Dehoff and Joelle Staub each delivered clutch hits that broke the game open. Kyleigh Hull added a triple, and Kaitlin Murphy capped the late surge with a two-run home run in the fifth to walk it off. Murphy also controlled the game from the circle, earning her first win of the season by surrendering six hits and striking out three.
The dominant second-game performance was one of Frederick's best offensive showings of the year, improving their record to 2-13 overall and 1-5 in Region 20 Division II play. The Cougars now look to their next contest as they hit the road for another Region 20 DII doubleheader against Montgomery College on Saturday, March 22, with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
