Written By: Gary Demski
FREDERICK, Md. - Right place. Right time. With 15 ticks left in the game and FCC trailing in the contest. Luca Carioti picked up his fifth foul of the game. Out goes Carioti, enter Thomas Hallowell. If you check out the boxscore he scored just two points tonight, but let me tell you, it was the biggest bucket of the game. With FCC trailing 73-72 with just 10 seconds left on the clock, Tyriel Collins drove the baseline for FCC and came up short on the go-ahead buck attempt. It was Hallowell under the bucket who snagged the offensive rebound and put it back up for the 74-73 lead. Garrett would inbound the ball and get called for a travel. Collins was immediately fouled with 4.2 seconds left in the game. He calmly knocked down a pair of free throws to give FCC a 76-73 advantage. A desperation three-point attempt came up short as the Cougars escaped to capture their first win in conference play.
The Cougars came out clicking on all cylinders as they jumped out to a 22-6 lead. They built as much as a 22-point lead prior to halftime. The Lakers would claw their way back and took a five-point lead late in the contest. In the end, the Cougars battled to the buzzer and secured the win.
Tyriel Collins was on fire for FCC in the win. The gritty point guard turned in quite a performance. He went for 23 points on 7-of-14 from the field. More importantly, Collins connected on 8-of-11 from the charity stripe and dished out 10 dimes in the win for a double-double. Alexander Williams poured in 16 points on 6-of-10 from the field. Before fouling out, big man Brayden Jones recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jack McGaha chipped in with 11 points.
As a team, FCC shot 25-of-46 from the field, including 8-of-16 from beyond the arc. The Cougars did a phenomenal job protecting the rock only committing eight miscues in the win.
FCC (2-12, 1-10) will return to the hardwood on Wednesday night at the Athletics Center when they host Cecil College. Tip is slated for 7 PM.
