Cougars Close Out Regular Season with Sights on Postseason

On a beautiful afternoon at The Rick home field, the Frederick Community College Cougars baseball team concluded its regular season with a doubleheader split against Region 20 opponents, Garrett College. The Cougars edged the Lakers 3-2 in Game 1 before falling 10-4 in the second game. With the results, Frederick finishes the regular season at 45-9 overall and 26-7 in conference play, setting the stage for a postseason push beginning May 9 at home in the Region 20 DII West Final Four.

The Cougars relied on a balanced offense and stellar bullpen performance to secure the win in the opener. After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, FCC responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, aided by RBI hits from William Gisriel and Luis Perez Alfaro. Andrew Varga contributed an RBI triple in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-1, a margin that proved decisive. On the mound, Evan Hassinger earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, improving to 7-0 for the season. Matthew Koeneke sealed the victory in the seventh, earning his fourth save by stranding the tying run at second base.

In Game 2, FCC jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with a towering three-run homer by Tysan Gingerich in the first inning. Joshua Erd doubled and crossed home plate twice, while Ryan Peacock added two hits. However, the Lakers erupted for nine unanswered runs during the fifth and sixth innings, capitalizing on FCC defensive errors and timely hitting. Garrett racked up 16 hits in total, and FCC struggled to find its rhythm on the mound after the early innings.

The team now shifts its focus to the postseason. With the best record in the region, they will host the Region 20 DII West Final Four on Friday, May 9. Opponents and game times are yet to be announced.
